An Ageing Continent, a Spine Under Pressure

Ageing population, evolving solutions

The numbers are clear: according to Eurostat, by 2050 more than 30% of the European population will be over 65, with peaks exceeding 35% in countries such as Italy, Spain, and Germany. Demographic ageing brings with it an inexorable rise in spinal pathologies: degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and osteoporotic vertebral fractures become increasingly prevalent with advancing age, translating into chronic pain, loss of independence, and reduced quality of life.

To put this impact in concrete terms, the Global Burden of Disease Study reveals that in Italy, in 2020 alone, vertebral fractures caused the loss of 302.000 years of healthy life. This figure is based on DALYs, the indicator that measures years lost to disability or premature death. This is not a strictly lethal condition, but a chronic one that robs hundreds of thousands of people every year of their independence and wellbeing.

The encouraging news is that advances in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment are delivering tangible results: between 1990 and 2020, the age-standardised DALY rate fell by 34.5% and the mortality rate by 41.8%. A significant improvement, demonstrating that technological innovation genuinely makes a difference.

It is within this context that BPB MEDICA™’s SPINE line takes its place: advanced solutions designed to meet growing demand with ever more precise, effective, and safe instruments.

Over recent decades, spinal surgery has undergone a true revolution with the advent of minimally invasive techniques, capable of treating vertebral pathologies while minimising tissue trauma, hospital stays, and patient risk.

BPB MEDICA™ has built this philosophy into the heart of its portfolio, developing a comprehensive and continuously expanding range for spine surgeons, interventional radiologists, neuroradiologists, and pain therapists.

From the cervical vertebrae to the lumbosacral region, our devices cover all major clinical procedures: from percutaneous discectomy with the DISKOM™ system, to vertebral compression fracture management with RENOVA SPINE™ kyphoplasty kits (available in 8G, 11G, and 13G), through to vertebroplasty performed with VERTEBROSTEEL™ and VERTEBROPLASTIC™ needles. For the cementation phase, the line delivers total efficiency with SPINOS BONE CEMENT, supported by the CEMIX™ mixing system and the innovative EASYNJECT™ delivery device.

The result is an integrated ecosystem of precise and reliable solutions, entirely oriented towards excellence in spinal care.

This October, we invite you to experience our SPINE solutions firsthand at EUROSPINE 2026 (7–9 October, Göteborg, Sweden – Booth B03:31) and NASS 2026 (14–17 October, San Antonio, TX – Booth 634).
