Vitrification is an advanced cryopreservation technique used in Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART) to preserve oocytes and embryos by rapidly cooling them to extremely low temperatures. Unlike traditional slow freezing, vitrification prevents ice crystal formation, which could damage the cells.
The process begins by placing the oocytes or embryos in a protective solution to remove excess water and reduce freezing-related damage. They are then carefully loaded onto a vitrification carrier device, such as SUPERVITRI™, which is designed to optimise cooling/warming efficiency and speed and protect the specimen.
Once loaded, the carrier is quickly submerged in liquid nitrogen, instantly solidifying the sample in a glass-like state. The carriers are then stored in visiotubes or cryotanks until they are needed for thawing and implantation. The hermetic sealing system of devices like SUPERVITRI™ ensures sterility and prevents contamination.
This highly effective technique significantly improves the survival rate of oocytes and embryos, increasing the chances of successful fertility treatments.
